New Thought
The New Thought movement developed on the US during the 19th century. New Thought is a practical spirituality that promotes fullness of living, through constructive thinking and affirmations. Religious groups based on New Thought includes Unity, Religious Science (Science of Mind) and Divine Science.Contemporary writers and teachers influenced by New Thought spirituality include Louise Hay, Michael Beckwith, Wayne W. Dyer and Esther Hicks.
The Law of Attraction encapsulates New Thought philosophy. In the Law of Attraction a person's thoughts dictates the reality of their lives, whether or not they're aware of it. If a person really wants something and truly believe it's possible, they will attract it into their lives.
Origins of New Thought
Phineas Parkhurst Quimby (1802-1866), was a New England philosopher, magnetizer, mesmerist, healer, and scientist. His teachings formed the basis of the The New Thought movement, he thought that illness originated in the mind as a consequence of erroneous beliefs and that opening the mind to God's wisdom could overcome any illness. He approached the mind-body problem by reasoning that mind was "spiritual matter" observing that man "exists outside himself," and that mind and body, although of two different natures, interact with each other.Among the students and patients who joined his studies and helped him to commit his teachings to writing were Warren Felt Evans (a Swedenborgian minister), Annetta Seabury Dresser and Julius Dresser, the founders of New Thought as a named movement.
The metaphysical healing practices of Quimby mingled with the "Mental Science" of Warren Felt Evans, and the ideas of the American transcendental philosophers Amos Bronson Alcott, Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882), and Henry David Thoreau. Emerson's writings in particular were a great source of inspiration to the early development of the New Thought movement.
Mary Baker Eddy the founder of the Christian Science movement was also a student of Quimby. Her early works were based on Quimby's writings, she eventually declared that her Christian Science was essentially different from Quimby's beliefs and practices.
Wallace D. Wattles was influenced Ralph Waldo Emerson, the following excerpt is from his 1910 book The Science of Getting Rich "The monistic theory of the universe the theory that One is All, and that All is One; That one Substance manifests itself as the seeming many elements of the material world is of Hindu origin, and has been gradually winning its way into the thought of the western world for two hundred years. It is the foundation of all the Oriental philosophies, and of those of Descartes, Spinoza, Leibnitz, Schopenhauer, Hegel, and Emerson. The reader who would dig to the philosophical foundations of this is advised to read Hegel and Emerson for himself."
